What Is A Physiotherapist Assistant?

The main duties of a Physiotherapy Assistant is to work alongside with the therapist in helping to teach and train patients to work and live efficiently within their limitation of mobility. Your focus would be on assisting clients to regain and strengthen their range of motion capabilities and allow them to effectively perform their daily routines. Illnesses and disabilities can vary drastically and you must be able to assist and attend to problems ranging from major motor vehicle accidents to minor muscle strain.
 

Program Objectives / Job Opportunities

Our Physiotherapist Assistant Diploma Program is taught in a module-based curriculum, designed to prepare graduates to practice as an assistant under the supervision of a licensed Physiotherapist. PTAs assist in implementing group and/or individual therapeutic procedures, techniques, specified in a treatment plan developed for each patient.
 
Our program focuses on important theoretical and practical areas in the field including but not limited to: development and function of the human body; medical terminology and medical record keeping; basic principles of biomechanics and anatomy in relation to movement; physiotherapy treatments; common tests and measurements used for assessments. Mock therapy sessions concentrating on various disabilities, help the student develop the proper communication skills in the rehabilitation field.  Anderson College students have the advantage of working within our simulated rehabilitation practical rooms which offers various real life clinical settings. 
 
Students are taught to prepare treatment areas and equipment, and to implement different treatment programs, including but not limited to therapeutic exercises, gait training activities, activities of daily living, activity analysis, transfers techniques, wheelchair measurements and fitting, heat and cold physical agents, electrotherapy agents (TENS – IFC- EMS machine, etc), mechanical physical agents (ultrasound, whirlpool, traction etc), massage techniques, basic splinting, assistive devices and other various treatment procedures.
